Bo: Eosinophilic furunculosis

Bo, a four-year-old golden cocker spaniel, had been stung or bitten by something which had triggered a massive immune response. Her nose swelled up and her owner describes it, saying: “It was really horrendous. Bo was in a real state. She didn’t move – she lay on her beanbag and was just a very unhappy dog.”

Her vet treated Bo with antibiotics and said it would take a week to resolve. However, the swelling just got bigger and bigger and was oozing pus, even though Bo’s owner took the dog back to her vet several times.

Bo’s vet then referred her to Anita, who used the video app to examine the big eruption on the dog’s nose. Anita took lots of photographs of Bo from different angles. She then asked Bo’s own vet to take a sample of cells from Bo’s nose. She prescribed high doses of steroids and carried on with the antibiotics. It took Bo a good six to eight weeks to recover, but her owner says she is fine now.

In the client’s own words:

“Anita was incredibly professional and gave us very clear guidance as to how the issue would pan out. She is an expert and told our vet how to treat Bo, who was by then seriously ill. Anita really complemented our vet and her intervention was a game-changer. As soon as she got involved, the dog got better.”

“Anita was so reassuring and I felt listened to. Instead of me having to ask things, Anita asked me a couple of really pertinent questions and knew how to deal with the problem. She asked, for example, if Bo had anything on her ears and eyebrows and, when I looked, there were lesions there. These are apparently quite rare, but because Anita is a dermatology specialist she knew what to do.”

“She was really approachable, friendly, professional, calm and, above all, kind. She really understood how important the dog was to us and realised it was traumatic to see her suffering. She wasn’t only interested in the issue with Bo’s nose – she took a really holistic approach. I sent her pictures when Bo’s swelling was really bad in between appointments and it was good to have Anita’s reassurance. She was a safe pair of hands.”
